Spotting a good investment opportunity

RobMac have had a long and happy association with fund managers Baillie Gifford. Andrew Hannay said “There’s something about the style of their investments that has always appealed to us and they also seem to have a knack of picking winners, particularly in the tech sector.

“Baillie Gifford’s Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust has holdings in Amazon, Tesla, Tencent, Alibaba and Netflix to name some well known tech brands. What’s more they spotted the opportunity and invested early.”

And they’re at it again. During the global lockdown, people have been looking at ways of entertaining themselves and one app seems to have caught teenager’s imagination in particular. Tik Tok is the social app in question where people post 15 second videos of all sorts of weird, wonderful and sometimes surprising things.

Launched in China in 2016 it has grown steadily since then but sky-rocketed during 2019/20 and now has over 1 billion users worldwide. It has a huge appeal to that very difficult group to target; teenagers.
