Finance Careers – Lisa takes it to the school

25th February 2021

Lisa Doig, director of IFA RobMac, is passionate about more young people choosing a career in finance. In fact, she says that she wished that she had considered it sooner in her own career.

“We know that ever since the Retail Distribution Review (RDR) in 2012, the number of IFAs has fallen from nearly 50,000 in the UK to just less than 37,000 in 2019. That’s a decrease of over 25% and means that people seeking financial advice have a lot less choice.

And yet not enough is being done to attract new and younger people into the financial sector. I spent the first 10 years of my working life doing something else before I switched over and became an independent financial adviser.

I want to make sure that the next generation don’t exclude considering a career in finance through a lack of awareness. Finance is only just beginning to appear in the education curriculum, which is great, but more needs to be done to explain to school leavers of what working in the sector is like.

I was delighted therefore to be asked to speak to S4 – S6 pupils at Boroughmuir High School as part of their Engage Initiative. Engage invites speakers from all sectors to tell students a little bit about what they do and answer any questions that they might have.

Hopefully, I can make students aware of some of the opportunities that exist in finance as well as just giving some personal examples of what it is like working in the sector. Perhaps I’ll even persuade one or two to at least think about making it a career choice.”

The event takes place via Zoom on Tuesday 2nd March and whilst this event is only open to pupils of Boroughmuir, Lisa hopes that there will be plenty of other occasions when she champions the cause of working in finance to other students.
